This paper analyses the legacy of Gregory the Great among his successors on the papal throne. The hypothesis to verify is that during these pontificates there was a political-religious division within the Roman Church that must be understood taking into account the conflict between a monastic faction and a clerical faction. The purpose of the work is to shed light on the pontificates of Gregory’s successors, trying to understand the political logics that underline these papal governments.
