An intraoperative alveolar air leak is one of the most common complications during lung resections. Many air leaks will resolve spontaneously within 48 hours however a significant proportion of air leaks can be prolonged. A prolonged air leak (PAL) is defined in general as air leakage lasting more than 5 days.
