In Chile, the school attended in basic education largely determines the occupational achievement of adults. In addition, the country has a stratified education system, high levels of school segregation and socio economic inequality. These problems could be related, setting up an inequality regime. The objective of the work is to explain how the school affects occupational achievement, fort his a set of mechanisms that mediate between this relationship was verified. A mediation analysis was performed using data from the Education Quality Measurement System and the Social Longitudinal Study. The results show that the educational system generates inequality in occupation alachievement through school segregation in schools and school achievement. In addition, two ways were identified by which the social class of origin affects occupational achievement, these are social capital and the choice of couple.
