This study analyzes production of knowledge about gymnastics at school from 1980 to 2018. We carried out an integrative review of articles published in journals and theses and dissertations of graduate programs in Physical Education in Brazil. We found 40 studies and concluded that views on the subject are restricted, not being enough to support teachers’ practice and contribute to changes in the approach to gymnastics at school. We believe that recognizing the importance of gymnastics implies establishing solid scientific knowledge about it, its demands and above all, its possibilities for school.
