Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia encountered in clinical practice. In the near future, we will likely face a pandemic occurrence due to the aging of the general population and the improved treatment of chronic disease associated with atrial fibrillation such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure and bronchopulmonary disorders. Furthermore, atrial fibrillation is very likely underestimated because many patients are asymptomatic thus not diagnosed.
