To the Editor Although patients with cardiovascular (CV) disease are at increased risk of severe illness with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), several countries affected by this pandemic have reported a drop in admissions for acute CV conditions since its beginning. Among others, cardiac surgery services have been significantly hit by COVID-19: in fact, by March 2020, many elective procedures had been delayed owing to the redistribution of intensive care resources and unquantifiable risk of acquiring COVID-19. Nevertheless, the effect of COVID-19 on the referral of life-threatening cardiovascular conditions requiring emergency surgical treatment is still not known. For this reason, we aimed to examine longitudinal trends in hospital admissions for emergency cardiac surgery cases before and during the early COVID19 pandemic in northeast Italy.
