A novel monobasic tridentate Schiff base derived from o-vanillin and 4aminoantipyrine, form 1:1 complexes with organotellurium(IV) trichlorides and diorganotellurium(IV) dichlorides of the type o-VL-AAP.RTeCl2 and o-VL-AAP. R2TeCl (where R = p-methoxyphenyl, p-ethoxyphenyl, p-hydroxyphenyl and 3methyl-4-hydroxyphenyl and o-VL-AAP = Schiff base). These complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR and H NMR spectroscopy. On the basis of these studies the donor sites have been identified as carbonyl oxygen of the pyrazolone ring, nitrogen atom of azomethine group (CH=N) and deprotonated oxygen of hydroxyl group to give chelate rings with tellurium centre having Ψoctahedral geometry.
