In Brief The authors' objective was to determine whether Broca's aphasia is associated with resections of anatomically defined Broca's area (Brodmann's areas 44/45). They found that Broca's aphasia is not associated with resections of Broca's area. Instead, transient Broca's aphasia is associated with resection of the ventral rolandic cortex and supramarginal gyrus, and also the underlying white matter tracts. These findings have significant implications for understanding the risks to language that are associated with surgery in eloquent brain areas.
