This study argues that, contrary to Juan Ruiz’s assertion that his lustful inclinations are a product of the astral influence of the planet Venus, the poet exhibits several traits of the melancholic born under the astrological sign of Saturn. The aim of this article is to illustrate how Juan Ruiz’s melancholic temperament conditions his behaviour and his emotional responses. This study demonstrates that the poet displays multiple psychopathological symptoms of melancholy through the semiotics of his body and his depressive moods after losing a loved one. The influence of Saturn, rather than his Venerean nature, impels him to seek sexual gratification.
