The development of the eye starts as early as three weeks of gestational age.[1] It involves the differentiation of specific cells from neuroepithelium and mesenchyme into various ocular tissues, which perform particular functions aiding in vision. Mutations in specific genes encoding for the development of the eye, such as PAX6, MRFP, TMEM98, BEST1, lead to developmental abnormalities in the eye.[2] These abnormalities can be as minimal as an isolated iris coloboma to gross defects like microphthalmos.
