A medical graduate from Karnataka Medical College, Hubli, Dr Kulkarni majored in Pulmonary Diseases and in Occupational Health. He started his initial career as a medical officer at the TB hospital in Mumbai before switching over to a career in Occupational Health. Over the years as a professional, he reached great heights in leadership positions in Larsen and Toubro followed by the position of Chief Medical Officer at Siemens (India). Dr Kulkarni was a keen learner and considered himself to be an eternal student and enriched his knowledge through various international exposures including at the Harvard School of Public Health.
