This essay traces the debate concerning Romantic and Classic back to the Schlegel brothers and then reviews the more recent comments of Walter Jackson Bate. Its thesis is that although the binary of Classic and Romantic may once have been useful, modern critics find it more helpful to refer to the Enlightenment, pre-Romanticism, and Romantic writers—labels that make fewer assumptions.
