The Spanish colloquial construction X hizo/ se marco un Nombre propio (‘X did/pulled a Proper Name’) (for example: Edurne hizo/ se marco un Angelina Jolie ‘Edurne did/pulled an Angelina Jolie’) has become widespread in recent years. Its subject acts as thematic agent, appears only with the verbs hacer(se) and marcarse, and its direct object is an determiner phrase introduced by un and followed by a proper name that is interpreted as a dynamic, delimited event. The ad hoc concept that is understood by this proper name depends on the context of the participants in the interaction, who are expected to recognize an event that corresponds with behavior that is typical of the individual mentioned. Contributing to the acquisition of this construction are both the loan of a similar construction in English and the previous existence of the verb hacer used with direct objects whose origins are proper names (for example: El saltador hizo un fosbury ‘The jumper did a Fosbury flop’).
