Key Points Question Are childhood body size and changes throughout adolescence associated with the risk of premenstrual disorders (PMDs) in young adulthood? Findings In a prospective cohort study of 6524 female participants in the US, higher childhood body mass index (BMI) was significantly associated with increased risk of PMDs and greater levels of premenstrual symptoms in young adulthood. Compared with individuals with normal BMI throughout adolescence, those with high BMI throughout adolescence reported significantly greater premenstrual symptoms in adulthood. Meaning These findings suggest that maintaining a normal body mass in childhood may be considered for lowering the burden of PMDs in adulthood.
