0123456789();: Glutamate, γ-aminobutyric acid, neuropeptide Y (NPY) and kisspeptin have been pursued as central triggers of puberty in higher primates for many years. Since 2003, a lot of research has focused on the hypothalamic kisspeptinergic pathways as initiators of the resurgence of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) pulsatile secretion that leads to puberty. Subsequently, an era of kisspeptin research encompassing almost two decades saw a large number of clinical and experimental studies strongly implicating the primary importance of kisspeptin in the induction of puberty in humans, non-human primates and non-primate mammals. However, an incisive review by Terasawa and coworkers on the rate-limiting and regulatory role of kisspeptin signalling in the timing of puberty in primates failed to substantiate the notion. Published in 2020, findings from Hessler and colleagues might be
